International Convention (ICON) --- June 30 - July 3, 2004
Wondering what to do with your summer? Wish you could escape summer school for a week? Needing fresh service ideas for your club? Looking for a hot Circle K’er and a summer fling? Well, the last part isn’t guaranteed, but it is guaranteed that you will have the time of your life at the 2004 International Convention (ICON) in St. Louis, Missouri!
From June 30th – July 3rd, Circle K’ers from 30 districts arrived in St. Louis to meet new people, share their service projects, elect International officers, attend district parties, and show off their spirit. Convention attendees stayed in the historic Union Station Hyatt Regency, which is not only a hotel, but a mall. PNW Circle K’ers also had the opportunity to visit Six Flags Amusement Park, as well as bond during a district dinner at the Hard Rock Café in Union Station.
Furthermore, this year, PNW members and clubs applied for a wide range of international awards. Last year, our club was the only PNW club recognized with an award (Outstanding Single Service). This year, our district took home many honours: Outstanding Kiwanis District Support Award; Distinguished District Award; Distinguished Governor Award (Rachelle Strawther); Distinguished Editor Award (Catherine McInnes); Distinguished District Committee Chair Award (Oliver Chung).
Regional Leadership Tranining Conference (RLTC) --- April 24, 2004
The “R” stands for ROCKIN’!
On April 24th, about 30 Peace Arch club members and leaders (and some awesome Kiwanians!) congregated in the SUB at UBC to spend an awesome day dedicated to lots of learning, leadership and, of course FUN! Outgoing Peace Arch Lieutenant Governor Kim Shelly teamed up with incoming LtG. Craig Mracek and UVic Co-President Morgan Crow to put together a day’s worth of activities that served to both amuse and educate. Small groups of new and outgoing officers provided a place for incoming leaders to learn about their positions and to have an opportunity to ask questions. Clubs also got to break into small groups to start discussing projects, plans and strategies for the 2004-2005 year.
The day was also filled with fun activities such as the brilliant Circle K Cranium game, where participants did lots of crazy things such as acting, singing and interpretive dancing to learn valuable information about Circle K and the Kiwanis family. All in all, the whole day was a wonderful occasion to prepare for 2004-2005, as well as to provide fellowship among all the awesome Peace Arch clubs!
Leaderscape --- April 16 - 18, 2004
Leaderscape, a 2 day camp focused on enhancing leadership skills, took place in Stanwood, Washington from April 16-18th. Because leadership is one of the 3 main tenants of Circle K, this fun-filled and educational weekend is a great opportunity for ANY Circle K’er who wants to improve his or her leadership abilities! The cost was $135 US, but there are many full scholarships available for anyone who would like to attend.
District Convention (DCON) --- February 27 - 29, 2004
Last year’s District Convention was held in beautiful Bellingham, Washington. This Circle K event is a conference where members will have the opportunity to meet with members from the other clubs in our district (all the clubs in BC, Washington, Oregon and Idaho). There are awards, workshops and lots of opportunities to socialize! DCON always promises to be a really great time - don’t miss it!
Also, UVic Circle K was in charge of organizing the pool party for last year’s convention. The pool party committee decided on Arctic Theme/Polar Bear Swim pool party. From the decorations to the mock tails, everything was fantastic. Great job guys!!
Despite some awards mix-ups, UVic did a fantastic job at DCON!! Our club was honored to receive the very prestigious Outstanding Club Achievement Award and Butch won the Outstanding Kiwanis Advisor Award. Many of our members also took away individual awards:
Liam Haggarty: PNW District Scholarship - $1500; Service Recognition Award; Society of Distinguished Collegians Award
Scott Antaya: Service Recognition Award; Society of Distinguished Collegians Award; “We Are Family” K Family Relations Award
Ross Tanner: International Service Award
Arlene Salido: “We Are Family” K Family Relations Award
Marta Nimlos: Secretary Mastermind of the Year
Congratulations also goes to Craig Mracek, who was elected Peace Arch Division LtG for 2004-2005. Everyone from UVic was awesome and showed tons of club spirit. We really did our part to help win the Divisional Spirit Award! Wow! Great job everyone!
Fall Leadership Traning Conference (FLTC) --- November 7 - 9, 2004
The first major conference of 2003-04 – the Fall Leadership Training Conference (FLTC) – took place November 7-9 in Ellensburg, Washington. Over 20 universities attended and UVic sent 8 people. The UVic group left on Friday the 7 th, took the ferry to Vancouver, and drove to Ellensburg (about 4 hrs from Vancouver) and returned Sunday night.
At the conference, Circle K’ers learned more about Circle K, developed leadership skills, and met likeminded people from across the Pacific Northwest!!!
The cost to attend was $90 CDN, but Circle K and Kiwanis kindly covered two-thirds of the cost, so the cost to UVic Circle K’ers was only $30. What a deal! Transportation costs were extra and were divided equally among all attendees. There were also a number of scholarships available to cover costs (they were applied for at the conference). UVic Circle K’s goal is to heavily subsidizing the costs to make sure everyone who wants to go is able to.
