Grandpa’s watches

With thanks to Cousin John.  These watches were worn proudly by his father (Uncle Jack) for many years.

1. The Gold Watch (inscribed “J.A.West”)

This is probably the gold watch presented to Grandpa by

Edward the seventh for heroism in the Boer War.

2.  The Silver Watch (inscribed “S. Thatcher, 1772”)

This beautiful watch was manufactured in Abingdon (historically, a West family town.)  It appears to be from the Westell line:  Jane Westell (William Westell West's mother) had a Grandmother - Jane Thatcher (1746-1827), so the date on the watch is a logical match - maybe bequest  from a brother or Uncle?  It is particularly exciting to have this relic from the Thatcher family since they are the oldest line in our family tree, which follows them back to Richard Thatcher (b. 1551).
